Meet the Team: Patty Finney, Administrative Director

Patty Finney

A veteran of rowing AND of our foundation, Patty is the keeper of all knowledge and history of the George Pocock Rowing Foundation. We could not do the work we do without her deep connection with our community, and fervor for our mission.

How long have you been part of the GPRF?

9 years

How does your position impact the GPRF?

Helping managers and directors find the right people to lead our work. As Administrative Director I get the opportunity to work with every staff member from the time they submit a resume through until the time they leave to pursue other opportunities. It is our people that make GPRF have an impact on the sport of rowing, and I am glad for my part in the process.

Where and when did you start rowing?

I walked on at LaSalle University in Philadelphia in 1990. I sought out the sport after watching my brother row for the US Naval Academy. Being from Staten Island, NY I didn't know crew was even a thing until I saw him race. Once I saw it I knew it was for me.

What is your favorite memory of rowing?

When I was in college we were a club team without a lot of resources. My first year rowing we had an equipment breakage or malfunction during every race. I can distinctly remember how it felt to cross the finish line having had nothing go wrong. A race where we gave it our all and had no excuses on how we may have done better "if only..." Funny thing is I don't remember where we placed.

Who inspires you the most in the sport?

I am inspired by the new rowers because they have the courage to do something they never have, with people they don't know and they have to be trusting of so many things.

How has your rowing experience changed during COVID-19?

I do not actively row any longer, but I have missed having the rowers in the Pocock building, erging, stretching, chatting and hearing how their rows were that day.

What advice would you give to someone considering rowing for the first time?

Give yourself one season to decide if you like it or not. Chances are you won't be able to get enough of it.
