Meet the Team: Tricia O’Hara, Grants Manager
Tricia O’Hara
New to our organization, but not new to the rowing community, Tricia is our latest addition to the GPRF staff. Read on to learn about her connection to rowing and why making an impact is so important to her.
How long have you been part of the GPRF?
I started with GPRF in the middle of April, 2021.
How does your position impact the GPRF?
I am the Grants Manager for GPRF. I work closely with our Communications and Development Director and our Executive Director, writing grants to fund our programs, so we can get more youth access to rowing.
Where and when did you start rowing?
While my rowing career consists of a week-long learn-to-row camp in 8th grade and a few times in a single on the water over the years, I come from a family of rowers. My grandfather rowed at the University of Washington and then was an Ancient Mariner for many years before he passed away. My dad is a long-time member of Los Gatos Rowing Club (LGRC), and my sister rowed at LGRC and SPU.
What is your favourite memory of rowing?
The very first time I got into a single, I was 8 years old. My dad and grandpa held the boat and let me feel what it was like to hold the oars and move back and forth on the slide. It was so fun to feel like they were introducing me to their world.
Who inspires you the most in the sport?
My grandfather rowed at the University of Washington and then took many years off before coming back to the sport later in life. He rowed almost all the way until he passed away. He showed me what it meant to be an athlete and how to form a deep community within athletics. He also provided a good reminder that you can always come back and start again.
In life?
I am so inspired by the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. Their ability to compete at the highest level of the sport while advocating for themselves and other female athletes is incredible. They show me how you can show up as yourself, work hard, and lift others up with you.
How has your athletic experience changed during COVID-19?
During Covid, I’ve needed to find ways to slow down and connect with myself and nature. I’ve enjoyed doing lots of yoga and getting onto the water with my paddleboard.
What advice would you give to someone considering rowing for the first time?
Come join me! We can learn and relearn together. Maybe I’ll get back on the water now that I am with GPRF :)
Do you have a favourite workout?
These days, I’m primarily a runner, and my favorite thing is a long run alongside the water.
