A sense of Community

The Discovery Crew pilot program took place at the Van Asselt Community Center, in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, Jump Rope Coach Alysia Mattson and Elite SRS jump ropes.

Discovery Crew is a free 4-week after-school program that brings rowing and movement directly to middle-schoolers in their neighborhoods.

With our core themes of Movement, Health, and Community we wanted to demonstrate that rowing and healthy living were part of a broader community of movement! The youth all received their own personalized jump ropes along with instruction from Coach Alysia.

When asked what they enjoyed the most about Discovery Crew, one participant said:

“Sense of community and humor between coaches and participants.”

Joy Williams, the Team Leader at Van Asselt also remarked:

“A big Thank You to the George Pocock Rowing Foundation for a fun and educational program here at Van Asselt C.C. Not only did the participants learn the basics of rowing that was new to them but also learned Teamwork, Healthy Habits, and Basics of Movement. The participants now have three new friends; Jon, Ian, and Alysia, who did a wonderful job and we are looking forward to an ongoing partnership.”

We learned a great deal during this first iteration of #DiscoCrew and are looking forward to the upcoming sessions at the Northshore YMCA from September 12 - October 7, at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center from October 17 - November 9, and at the Van Asselt Community Center from November 16 - December 7.
