For a second year in a row, ERG ED® awards Concept2 grant to two new communities
SEATTLE - July 2024 - The George Pocock Rowing Foundation (GPRF), in partnership with the global leader in the rowing equipment industry, Concept2, Inc., has announced two new site expansions through the GPRF’s ERG ED® program.
ERG ED® is a classroom-based indoor rowing education program that teaches school-aged students the fundamentals of rowing on Concept2 RowErg machines. Originally launched in 2010 by the GPRF, the ERG ED® program currently operates in 20 cities in 8 different states, reaching 55,000 students annually. Through ERG ED®, students use rowing to learn essential life skills such as fitness, goal setting, and teamwork.
“The ERG ED® program represents a large-scale, systemic change in how young people of all backgrounds access and experience the sport of rowing. In each school district, students learn the basics on the same equipment they’d encounter in their local rowing program so that they come into a new environment confident and comfortable,” said Jon Campaña, Director of Rowing Programs at the GPRF. “We are so excited to partner with Concept2 to expand our reach.”
After a meticulous grant application process, and a thorough analysis of all ERG ED® grant applicants, and with support from Concept2, the GPRF has funded two new ERG ED® sites; BachmanROC Rowing Club in partnership with Dallas Independent School District in Texas, and Hackensack Crew Club in collaboration with Hackensack Public Schools in New Jersey.
Both cities will receive 20 Concept2 RowErgs, the ERG ED® curriculum, and teacher training for their school district.
“As the Co-Founders of BachmanROC Rowing Club in Dallas, Texas, we are humbled to receive one of two C2/GPRF ERG ED® Grants in partnership with the Dallas Independent School District and Dallas Parks & Recreation Department. We are excited to continue introducing the sport of rowing, along with its numerous health, fitness, social, and educational benefits, to the students in our district and the underrepresented communities surrounding Bachman Lake. We are honored that the Pocock Foundation and Concept2 have entrusted us with 20 Concept2 ergs and an incredible curriculum to carry out this program. We believe it will have an amazing impact on the participating students and potentially change the trajectory of their futures. We are grateful to be included in the nationwide community of ERG ED® educators, who genuinely love rowing and are dedicated to sharing it with as many youth as possible." shared Pat Hamner, Co-Founder & President and Flo Elkins Co-Founder & Head Coach of BachmanROC Rowing Club.
BachmanROC Rowing Club started its ERG ED® program with a Learn to Row session at Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Texas earlier this month.
"We had two groups of approximately 100 students for two hours each. We hope to leverage the experience with these kids into our on-the-water summer rowing camps and later, a competitive high school program this fall. We are seeking to get faculty members and coaches to invite students they know to participate this summer in our rowing camps" said Patrick Hamner, Co-Founder of BachmanROC Rowing Club.”
The next round of grant applications for this initiative will open in April of 2025 to school districts and boathouses in the United States.
