Meet the Team: Jon Campaña, Middle School Program Manager
Jon Campaña
How long have you been part of the GPRF?
Just under a month. I started in September of 2021.
How does your position impact the GPRF?
We identified Middle School as a key time to get young people interested in the sport but also an area of opportunity in retention, so creating programming surrounding these needs impacts the mission in a big way.
Where and when did you start rowing?
At the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL in 2009.
What is your favorite memory of rowing?
The first time I went to the Head of the Hooch. I remember being so stoked to be a part of the larger rowing community and it was such a fun time with my team.
Who inspires you the most in the sport?
Greg Simons. Hands down. He is a masters rower, teammate, mentor, and friend in Sarasota and I am constantly inspired by who he is on and off the water.
In life?
My best friends, Mike and Steph Matalone. They introduced me to the sport, have been a constant source of support, and I literally can't think of anyone who doesn't enjoy their company. Truly a power couple through and through.
How has your rowing experience changed during COVID-19?
While very stressful, it allowed a lot of time to reflect (nothing like being alone with your thoughts on an erg or in a 1x!). Time apart from team boats shed new light on how we as rowers and coaches contribute individually to the whole. We spend so much time learning how to seamlessly assimilate into a lineup that it was cool to see who we all were outside of that structure.
What advice would you give to someone considering rowing for the first time?
"[Boats] move pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." But, for real, make it your own, enjoy the little things, and have fun!
Do you have a favorite workout?
I'm a big fan of 2 x 20 mins.
