Senior Athlete Spotlight: Aylin D
1. When did you start rowing, and why?
I started rowing my freshman year of high school (2020) during covid. I had made a deal with a friend that we would do rowing and cross country together but due to covid restrictions on sports, I did rowing and she did cross country. I had wanted to branch out from the sports I had done for years and this felt like the perfect opportunity since everyone starts from the same level, unlike other sports.
2. What has been your most memorable experience on the team?
My most memorable experience on my team was probably regionals my junior year. We were placed in an unfamiliar lineup and I was coxing for the first time ever (bow loaded 4+) but the support we received from staff, other teams, parents, and our teammates was amazing. Even though we had an equipment issue and barely finished the race, it was such a positive and fun experience since our mindset was to just have fun and leave it all out on the course. Aside from the races I got to meet so many other amazing athletes and play fun games - the sense of community was really strong.
3. What are your plans this fall?
I plan to attend the University of Virginia to study economics and foreign affairs!
4. What advice would you give to a new athlete in rowing?
The practices will be challenging and push you to limits you didn't know existed but stick with it and get to know your teammates! The community you create while rowing is one of the strongest, caring, and most welcoming you will ever be a part of. Lean on your community when things get hard and you will see growth not only in your splits but as a person!
